The story of Manmohan Singh reflects the contemporary national and international political-economy. While Manmohan Singh sprang from the Indian context, his pioneering contribution to economic liberalization is an integral part of an international ideological movement. Given the natural understatement of his character which is the hallmark of economists, Manmohan Singh has not spoken about the political context of his rise in the national and international world. But history is witness to the fact that Manmohan Singh was a national necessity to save the Congress party from a political predicament in 2004. Outside of India, he is perceived as an economist who executed (certainly with great help and leadership from PV Narasimha Rao and Sonia Gandhi, his mentors) neoliberal reforms in the complex Indian society.
